Add New FTP User/Login

FTP users can be added, updated, and managed in cPanel -> Files section -> FTP Accounts.

Note: When adding a new FTP user, the "Directory" field should only be set to "public_html". If the default value is kept, then you will not be able to upload into the public_html folder for your website.

Are you connecting securely using FTPS (FTP over TLS/SSL)?

A cPanel update in early March 2025 no longer allows insecure/unencrypted/cleartext FTP logins, so you must connect securely.

If you are not connecting securely, then you must change the connection type from FTP to FTPS (FTP over TLS/SSL). No other FTP connection settings need to be changed (e.g. host, port, username, password).

Note:

  • FTP over TLS/SSL (explicit FTPS) is the correct method, which uses port 21, and sends an AUTH TLS command to encrypt the login (handshake) and data.
  • FTP over TLS/SSL (implicit FTPS) is an older method of FTPS, which uses port 990, so this cannot be used.

Also, FTP users can safely ignore TLS/SSL certificate warnings.
